Why NuStep ?

The NuStep Story

NuStep was invented by a long time roofer and the founder and owner of SlateTec.  He discovered the interlayment material used in his system had the potential to be turned into step flashing for sloped roof applications.

The NuStep team set out to design and engineer a step flashing that is easy to work with and brings efficiency and safety to the job site. We provided early prototypes to contractors and crews who confirmed NuStep Flashing was easier to work with, quick and safe to install, and excelled in all weather conditions.

NuStep received a utility patent in 2018 and officially launched in the Spring 2019.

A HDPE Polymer step flashing…w

ill that hold up?

This simple answer is, yes. NuStep’s flashing technology is a polymer membrane that is tested using the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards.

Every production run is tested for tear, impact, tensile, and puncture resistance as well as UV exposure and thermal behavior. This rigorous testing ensures that each piece is prepared for the hail storms and heat waves that a roof will face.

What about ICC Code Compliance?

NuStep flashing is recognized and certified by the International Code Counsel (ICC ESR-3731)

ICC : 2018 International Residential Code

*R903.2.1 Where flashing is of metal, the metal shall be corrosion resistant with a thickness of not less than 0.019 inch (0.5mm)

*R905.2.8.3 Sidewall flashing. Base flashing against a vertical sidewall shall be continuous or step flashing and shall be not less than 4 inches (102mm) in height and 4 inches (102 mm) in width and shall direct water away from the vertical sidewall onto the roof or into the gutter.

How does NuStep compare to traditional metal step flashing?

In addition to a product that is faster and safer, NuStep has additional benefits over traditional metal step flashing. NuStep is 75% lighter, making it easier to carry and safer on the roof. Each piece has two colors options to blend in with siding or shingles. And every piece of NuStep is guaranteed to meet ICC certification.

Safer? How?

Safety was key when designing NuStep.

USA Today reports that Roofing is the 4th most dangerous job in the US.

While flashing is only a small piece of each roofing project, reducing any potential injury is a good start.

NuStep is made of HDPE polymer, meaning no gloves, snips or additional tools. The elimination of sharp edges and a lighter product on the ladder and on the roof is a step in the right direction.
